Britská minisérie na motivy skutečných událostí, 4 díly.
Nejvýznamnější anglická průmyslová rodina 19. století zaměstnávala tisíce pracovníků ve svých pěti přádelnách bavlny na celém severozápadě Anglie. Quarry Bank Mill založil Samuel Greg jako důmyslný nápad pro využití síly řeky Bollin. Rodina plná protikladů si zakládala na své lidumilné pomoci sociálně slabým, ale za jejich zdánlivě laskavou dobročinností stál pouhý kalkul. Pravidelné vybírání sirotků z chudobince bylo jen cílené zneužití jejich bezmocnosti jako levné a tiché pracovní síly. Nesměli až do dospělosti opustit areál mlýna, ani požadovat plat. Denní příděl jídla jim servírovali do holé natažené dlaně, správce si vybíral mezi dívkami oběti pro své choutky a po každém provinění následoval tvrdý trest. Rozsáhlý historický archiv, čítající více než 20 000 dopisů, mzdové knihy, diáře, přepisy rozhovorů a deníky, které po sobě zanechali pracovníci a učňové z přádelny, inspiroval k rekonstrukci osobních dramat zpracovaných do televizní čtyřdílné minisérie. Jednou z obětí je i hrdinka Esther - nespoutaná rebelka s prostořekou pusou a bojovným odhodláním. Když se do mlýna nechá zaměstnat i progresivní mechanik s pohnutou minulostí Daniel, zdá se, že konečně přichází nová a lepší budoucnost.
